How to Draw- Under Construction
Topic A- Pencils
Question 1- What do I use to draw with? Answer: I use colored pencils. There are many kinds of colored pencils now available for
purchase. When I started there was really only one type, and that was Prismacolor. These are nice pencils, soft, thick leads that apply easily with heavy or light pressure. They have a range
of 120 colors (which is never enough for me.) There are many other types of pencils. If you would like to learn more, click here.
Question 2- If someone were just starting out, what would you recommend? Answer: The pencils can get expensive, especially if you are like me, and love all the beautiful
colors. One way around this is to buy a pencil marketed for children, in the Crayola style box. The color range is now up to 50, I believe. I still use these occasionally, because they make a
pencil, meant for a child’s hand, that is only half the regular length. You can have 50 colors in a very small package, which makes them perfect for traveling with. For paper, I’d suggest an
economical pad of drawing paper, that states it is suitable for pen, pencil, marker or charcoal. You could also use a sketch paper, to begin, which is sometimes cheaper, but it is also a lighter weight paper.
Topic B- Paper
Question 1- What do you draw on? Answer: I mainly draw on watercolor paper. There are many types of watercolor paper, and
the cost varies greatly. My favorite is of course the most expensive, but most of the drawings done here are on 140# paper, and some of it is the tinted water color. For more information on paper types, click here.
Question 2- Can you draw on other surfaces? Answer: Of course, but I’ve only drawn on two so far. Paper, both regular 60 and 90#
drawing paper, and watercolor paper. I’ve also drawn on canvas. Click here for sample.
